Fusion of 12C + 24Mg far below the barrier: Evidence for the hindrance effect

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 12C(24Mg, X), E=26-52 MeV; measured evaporation residues (ERs), fusion σ(E) using E-ΔE and time-of-flight telescope for detection of ERs at LNL-Legnaro; deduced S factor, influence of inelastic channels on fusion, hindrance effect with energy threshold. Comparison with coupled channels calculations using the CCFULL code and Woods Saxon (WS) internuclear potential, and with systematics of energy threshold of hindrance for other medium-light systems: 12C+12C, 12C+16O, 16O+16O, 12C+30Si, 24Mg+30Si, 28Si+30Si, 16O+76Ge, and 27Al+45Sc. Discussed astrophysical significance of reactions in the carbon and oxygen burning stages of heavy stars.

Identification of high-spin proton configurations in 136Ba and 137Ba

Comparison with shell model predictions using GCN50:82, PQM130, realistic SM and SN100PN interactions. Systematics of high-spin levels in 134,135Xe, 136,137Ba, 138,139Ce, 140Nd.

NUCLEAR STRUCTURE 136,137Ba; calculated levels, J, π, wave functions, neutron occupation numbers using shell model with several interactions. Comparison with shell-model calculations for 134Ba, and with previous experimental results. Systematics of positive- and negative-parity yrast states in N=78 nuclei: 130Te, 132Xe, 134Ba, 136Ce, 138Nd, 140Sm, 142Gd, and Z=56 nuclei: 126,128,130,132,134,136,138Ba.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 194Pt(16O, xn), (16O, pxn), 202Rn/203Rn/203mRn/204Rn/205Rn/206Rn/203At/204At/205At/206At/207At, E=80-125 MeV; measured reaction products, Eα, Iα, ranges of the short-lived Rn isotopes in Al using semiconductor surface-barrier detector (SSBD) at the INFN-LNL, Legnaro. Comparison with SRIM/TRIM Monte Carlo calculations and simulations. 126,128Ba, 142Sm, 149Tb, 150,151Dy; analyzed and compiled mean ranges in Al from β and α activity measurements in literature. Ta(16O, X)192Tl/193Tl/194Tl/191Hg/192Hg/193Hg, E*=3-19 MeV; Ta(12C, X)188Au/Pt, E*=3-19 MeV; Ho(20Ne, X), Tm(16O, X), E*=3-19 MeV; Au, Bi(12C, X), Ir(18O, X), Ir(16O, X), E=0.01-0.08 MeV/nucleon; analyzed and compiled literature data for mean ranges in Al for evaporation residues of Hg, Tl, Au, Pt, Ir, Re, Os, Hf, Po, At, and Ac isotopes produced in different reactions.

Fusion hindrance and Pauli blocking in 58Ni 64Ni

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 64Ni(58Ni, X), E(cm)=86.92, 87.44, 87.97, 88.50, 89.02, 89.76, 90.75, 92.28, 94.59, 99.26, 104.31 MeV; measured evaporation residues using two microchannel-plate detectors, a transverse-field ionization chamber (IC), and a thick Si detector at the XTU Tandem Accelerator of INFN-LNL, Legnaro; deduced fusion σ(E) around or below Coulomb barrier, S-factors. Comparison with coupled channels calculations using CCFULL code, and with data for 64Ni+64Ni and 40Ca+96Zr systems. Discussed impact of inelastic and transfer channels on fusion, and conclude that no hindrance effect observed, effectively counterbalancing the Pauli repulsion.

Four experiments carried out using 136Xe beam with 208Pb and 238U targets using PRISMA magnetic mass spectrometer and AGATA demonstrator array at Legnaro PIAVE+ALPI accelerator, 136Xe beam with 198Pt target using GAMMASPHERE and CHICO particle detector arrays at LBNL-cyclotron facility, and 11B beam with 130Te target using HORUS array at Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. 135Xe, 137Ba; deduced levels, J, π, isomers, configurations, B(E2). Comparison with shell-model calculations. Systematics of levels and isomers in N=81 nuclides 131Sn, 133Te, 135Xe, 137Ba, 139Ce, 141Nd, 143Sm and 145Gd.

NUCLEAR STRUCTURE 135Xe, 137Ba; calculated levels, J, π, B(E2) using large-scale shell-model with PQM130 and SN100PN interactions, average proton occupation numbers in each single particle orbit of the gdsh model space. Comparison with experimental data.

Comparison with shell-model calculations using PQM130 and SN100PN interactions. Systematics of level energies in N=78 and 79 isotones from Z=50 to 64, and even-A A=120-136 Xe isotopes.
