Comparison with several model calculations of photon strength functions (PSF) and nuclear level densities (NLD) for deformed nuclei, and with experimental data from other reactions. Discussed scissors mode in odd-A Gd isotopes from summed reduced M1 strengths. Evidence of odd-even effect in strength of scissors mode.
