Evidence for ground-state electron capture of 40K

RADIOACTIVITY 40K(EC); measured decay products, X-rays, Eγ, Iγ; deduced EC0/EC* relative branching ratios to the ground state and excited state of 40Ar, T1/2, decay scheme. First experimental verification of a third-forbidden unique transition. Discussed the impact of found evidence of the 40K decay to the ground-sate on the geochronology and nuclear theory. Comparison to theoretical estimations. Sensitive x-ray silicon drift detector (SDD) and Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS).

RADIOACTIVITY 142La, 142Ba, 142Cs(β-)[from 238U(p, F), E=40 MeV]; measured Eγ, Iγ, Eβ, Iβ, γβ-coin, total absorption spectra; deduced T1/2, average gamma energy per decay, β-feeding intensities, decay patterns, σ for the detection of reactor antineutrinos. 142Cs(β-n); deduced β-delayed neutron branching ratio. Comparison with other experimental values and ENSDF evaluation. Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) array of 19 NaI(Tl) coupled with auxiliary Si-strip detectors at the mass separator and Tandem accelerator at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Deciphering 98Nb β decay with the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer at ORNL

RADIOACTIVITY 98Nb(β-)[from decay chains of 98Rb and 98Sr produced in 238U(p, F) at HRIBF-ORNL facility]; measured Eγ, Iγ, total absorption γ-ray spectrum using NaI(Tl)-based Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS); deduced average γ energy per β decay, and average ν-bar; discussed impact of measured β-feeding pattern on reactor decay heat calculations and predicted detection rates of reactor ν-bar. 98Zr; measured T1/2 with 98Zr and 98Nb in equilibrium, and compared with value in the ENSDF database. 98Mo; deduced levels, β feedings to the g.s. and excited states, logft, conversion electron per β decay from the E0 transition from the first excited 0+ state in 98Mo. Comparison with β feedings and average γ energy in the ENSDF and ENDF/B-VIII.0 databases, and with previous experimental results. Relevance to the study of β- decays of abundantly produced fission products in nuclear reactors.
