Monte Carlo simulations of trapped ultracold neutrons in the UCNt experiment

RADIOACTIVITY 1n(β-); calculated neutron dynamics, trajectory and neutron detection rate in Ultra-cold neutron (UCN) magneto-gravitational neutron trap by developing an in-depth Monte Carlo model for the UCNτ experiments. Discussed implications of chaotic dynamics on controlling the systematic effects, such as spectral cleaning and microphonic heating, for a successful UCN lifetime experiment to reach 0.01% level of precision.

Total cross sections for ultracold neutrons scattered from gases

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 1H, 3He(n, n'), E=ultracold neutrons; measured scattered neutrons, transmission ratio as a function of pressure, total cross sections, total cross section as a function of the number of hydrogen atoms using the following gas targets: hydrogen, ethane, methane, isobutene, n-butane, ethylene, water vapor, propane, neopentane, isopropyl alcohol, and 3He; deduced cross section per hydrogen atom as a function of molecular mass. Relevance to ongoing experiments pn neutron half-life measurements using ultracold neutrons (UCN) at LANL facility.

Upscattering of ultracold neutrons from gases

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 1,2H, C, F, N, Ne, Ar, Xe(n, n'), E=UCNs from Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) ultracold neutron source; measured Eγ, Iγ, E(n), I(n), upscattered cross sections for room temperature gas targets of hydrogen, deuterium, nitrogen, neon, argon, xenon, C4H10, CF4, and air. Comparison with experimental values for higher neutron energies, and with theoretical calculations. Relevance to measurement of the half-life of free neutron decay at LANSCE using a magnetogravitational trap.
