Comprehensive study of radon progeny attachment to surfaces

RADIOACTIVITY ²²²Rn, ^218,214,210Po(α); measured Eα, Iα; analyzed radon concentrations, attachment rates of airborne ²²²Rn radioprogeny collection on surfaces of several materials: copper, Hamamatsu silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), high density polyethylene (HDPE), carbon fiber composite, sapphire, nickel, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), metallized silica, and fused silica; deduced dominant attachment by ²¹⁸Po; discussed impact of environmental conditions on the attachment. GEANT4 simulations for all the samples. Comparison of data to attachment modeling, using the Jacobi model. Relevance to next-generati on experiments on neutrinoless double β decay, dark matter, and solar neutrinos for achieving unprecedented low backgrounds.
