First experimental prompt γ-ray spectra in fast-neutron-induced fission of 238U

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 238U(n, F), E=1.6, 5.1, 15.0 MeV; measured Eγ, Iγ from prompt fission γ spectra (PFGS) using BGO detector, and using time-of-flight technique to reject prompt fission neutrons at the CEA, DAM, DIF Van de Graaff accelerator; deduced average multiplicity and mean photon energy per fission. Comparison with prompt fission γ spectra from 235U(n, F), and with theoretical predictions using GEF and FIFRELIN codes.

Predictions of characteristics of prompt-fission γ-ray spectra from the n + 238U reaction up to En = 20 MeV

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 234,236U, 240,242Pu, 252Cf(n, F); analyzed systematics and experimental data for prompt-fission γ-ray spectra (PFGS); deduced revised parameters and used for 238U+n reaction. 238U(n, F), E<20 MeV; predicted average prompt-fission γ-ray multiplicity, average total γ-ray energy released, and average γ-ray energy per fission as function of incident neutron energy. Comparison with experimental data, and theoretical calculations.
