Abstract

Using the generalized optical theorem for charged particles, the total reaction cross section σR and the nuclear scattering amplitude fN at 0° have been determined model independently for the first time in the 6He+12C system. A large fraction of σR is accounted for by fN(0°) — a manifestation of the nuclear forward glory effect. A comparison with the 6Li+12C system supports the prediction that the high break-up probability of 6He reduces the fraction of the total reaction cross section accounted for by the nuclear scattering amplitude at 0°.
