Abstract

Angular distribution data on the elastic scattering of pions from a number of nuclei between O18 and Pb208 are studied at energies around the (3,3) resonance in terms of the strong absorption model of Frahn and Venter. The parameters thus obtained are employed for the analysis of the inelastic scattering leading to the 21+ state in a number of nuclei and the deformation parameters are extracted. The model is found to give a reasonably good description of both elastic and inelastic scattering of π±.
