Abstract

We present a procedure which allows the extension of linear-response calculations to open-shell nuclei. Using simple and intermediate coupling shell model wave functions for the C12 ground state we apply our procedure to calculate the characteristics of multipole giant resonances. Our results agree well with experiment and are compatible with the predictions of other open-shell random phase approximation models.
