Abstract

Angular correlations between the tritons and 16O GS nuclei, produced in the sequential reaction 16O(7Li,t)20Ne*( varies as )16O, have been measured for a number of levels in 20Ne. The tritons were detected at angles as large as 30 degrees in the laboratory and the fits to the correlations suggested the existence of a symmetry axis for the decay of the intermediate state 20Ne. Taking the observed symmetry axis as the axis of quantization the population of the magnetic m=0, +or-1 of levels of 20Ne with known JPi was deduced from the correlations. The data are best fitted by assuming at least 84% population of the m=0 substate. These observations are consistent with the (7Li,t) reaction being mainly a direct reaction, and consequently it can be used reliably to obtain spectroscopic information. The structure of two states at 12.56 and 15.36 MeV is discussed.
