Abstract

Differential scattering cross sections for the elastic and first excited state inelastic scattering of O16 and O18 from Si28 have been measured at O16 laboratory bombarding energy of 33, 36, and 38 MeV and at an O18 bombarding energy of 36 MeV. The experimental results have been analyzed in terms of coupled channels on the basis of a rotational model. For O16 projectiles the deformation of Si28 was found by this technique to be β2=0.30±0.08 and β4+0.1. The cross sections for the scattering of O18 by Si28 could not be described with the deformation parameters obtained from the O16 + Si28 scattering data. The present results are compared with recent experiments using different projectiles and with the results of recent theoretical calculations.
