Abstract

The emission of He5 (T12=8×1022 sec for decay into α+n) in spontaneous fission of Cf252 is established from a correlation measurement involving the direction and the kinetic energies of the neutrons and the long-range α particles. Approximately 11% of these α's are products of He5 breakup. The initial energy of the fragments of the He5 at scission are calculated from the properties of the He5 decay. They are 31 ± 11 and 3.2 ± 0.9 MeV, respectively.
