Abstract

The angular correlation of the first-emitted α and an α from the sequential decay of the Be2.98 state in the reaction B10(d,α)Be2.98(α)He4 strongly suggests that this reaction proceeds by compound-nucleus formation at Ed=0.4 MeV and by a deuteron-pickup direct interaction at Ed=1.0 and 1.5 MeV. The observed symmetry axis for the Be2.98 breakup distribution in its own center of mass is compared to the momentum-transfer and recoil directions associated with various possible mechanisms and appears to provide the necessary information to select the mechanism.
