Abstract

The breakup of Li6 and Li7 into two charged particles following π capture is studied. The branching ratios for the reactions π+Li62H3 (3.4×104), π+Li7H3+H4 (3.7×104), and π+Li7H3+H*4 (4×104) are measured. The energy of the ground state and first excited state (H*4) of particle-unstable H4 are found to be 2.9 and 6.1 MeV above the energy of the unbound H3+n. An upper limit is set for the branching ratio of the reaction π+Li7H2+H5 (<2×104).
