Abstract

A study has been made of the nuclear spins I and hyperfine structures of several radioactive isotopes in the rare-earth region. The nuclear-spin determinations are Pr143(I=72), Nd149(I=52), Tb161(I=32), Ho161(I=72), and Er165(I=52). The measured hyperfine constants are: for Er171, |A|=197.0(2.9) Mc/sec, |B|=3646(106) Mc/sec, BA>0; and for Tm171, |A|=372.1(5.9) Mc/sec; and the moments inferred from them are: for Er171, |μI|=0.70(5) nm, and for Tm171, |μI|=0.227(5) nm. A discussion of these values in terms of the various nuclear models is included.
