Abstract

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 17-MeV (center-of-mass energy) protons by Be9, B10, Ne20, Mg25, and Mg26 was studied using scintillation crystal spectroscopy. Angular distributions were obtained for most of the levels observed. All the angular distributions are characteristic of a direct interaction with initial-and final-state interactions. The differential cross sections were summed to obtain total cross sections which were compared to EL transition rates when known. For the larger (p, p) cross sections a strong correlation with the EL transition rates was found. This correlation is discussed in some detail.
