Developing the MeV potential of DUNE: Detailed considerations of muon-induced spallation and other backgrounds

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 40Ar(μ, X)8B/8He/8Li/9Li/9C/11Be/11Be/11Li/12B/12N/12Be/13O/13B/14B/15C/16C/16N/17N/18N/20F/23F/26Na/27Na/29Mg/30Al/31Al/32Al/32P/33P/34P/35S/36Cl/37Ar/38Cl/39Cl/39Ar/40Cl/41Ar, E=1-10000 GeV; calculated β-decaying isotopic production yield from cosmic ray muon spallation on liquid argon in the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), spallation product β--decay spectra and time evolution, and data cuts for background minimization using the Monte Carlo code FLUKA; quantified rates of single and multiple MeV events due to spallation, radiogenic neutron capture, and other background activities. Comparison with other calculated yields from spallation reactions.
