Study of Mass-Asymmetric Fission of 180, 190Hg Formed in the 36Ar + 144, 154Sm Reactions

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 36Ar(144Sm, X), (154Sm, X)180Hg/190Hg, E= 158, 181, 222 MeV; measured reaction products; deduced asymmetric fission of 180,190Hg with the most probable masses of light and heavy fragments of 79 and 101 amu, and 84 and 106 amu, respectively. Two components manifesting the symmetric and asymmetric fission modes are observed in the kinetic energy distributions.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 248Cm(52Cr, X)300120*, E=290, 304-MeV; 248Cm(54Cr, X)302120*, E=296 MeV; 232Th(68Zn, X)300120*, E=335 MeV; measured binary reaction products in coincidence by the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET, the first two reactions using 248Cm target at the U-400 cyclotron facility of FLNR-Dubna, and the experiment with 232Th target at the University of Jyvaskyla K-130 cyclotron facility; deduced yield and TKE matrices of binary fragments as functions of mass and energy, capture cross sections as a function of effective fissility parameter, excitation energy of primary fragments as function of fragment mass, contributions of symmetric fragments to the capture cross sections, fusion probability as function of the mean fissility parameter, and production σ for the formation of Z=120 superheavy nucleus (SHN). 238U(64Ni, X)302120*, E=335 MeV; compared results of this experiment, reported in 2010Ko16, at Jyvaskyla with the data in the present experiments. 248Cm(54Cr, X) reaction determined to be the most favorable for the production of Z=120 element.

Proton-Induced Fission of 232Th at Low and Intermediate Energies

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 232Th(p, f), E=7-55 MeV; measured fission fragments mass distribution (yield), energy (TKE) at K-130 cyclotron at Jyvaskyla with fission fragments ToF measured by CORSET spectrometer at 13-55 MeV and at U-150M cyclotron at Almaty at 7, 10, 13 MeV; deduced symmetric and asymmetric fission modes in mass-energy distributions at all energies with yield of symmetric products falling with increasing proton energy, deduced indication of superasymmetric fission mode associated with increased yield of fragments with masses in region of A≈70; compared with published mass distributions from 235U, 239Pu, 242Am, 245Cm, 249Cf(n, f), E=thermal.
