234NP cL $If the {+238}Am g.s. configuration, in analogy to {+241}Am (or
234NP2cL {+239}Am; note its J|p is not clearly known) proton and {+235}U (or
234NP3cL {+237}Pu) neutron states, were: J|p=1+: |p5/2[523],|n7/2[743], and if
234NP4cL the {+234}Np g.s. configuration were: J|p=0+; |p5/2[642],|n5/2[633],
234NP5cL |a decay from {+238}Am to {+234}Np g.s. would involve spin flips for
234NP6cL both proton and neutron states. A hindrance factor of |?60 (using
234NP7cL I|a=100%) for 5940|a is not consistent with such a transition (see
234NP8cL 1972El21). Therefore, 5940|a from {+238}Am g.s. should feed an
234NP9cL excited state (see also discussion in 1972Ah04).
234NP c $J{+|p},T{-1/2},%|a from the A=238 ENSDF evaluation (2015BR06). For
234NP2c %|a, see also 1972Ah04.
234NP c 1972Ah04: Measured E|a from {+238}Am decay with a Si surface barrier
234NP2c detector. Determined %|a from |g measurements following the {+238}Am
234NP3c |a decays with a Ge(Li). The {+238}Am sample was prepared by
234NP4c bombarding {+237}Np with 40 MeV |a beam and chemical purification.

234NP cL $The level fed by the 5940-keV |a-particle group from {+238}Am may be
234NP2cL the J|p=1-: |p5/2[523], |n3/2[631] state. A |g ray between this state
234NP3cL and the g.s. (probable J|p=0+: |p5/2[642], |n5/2[633]) is forbidden.
234NP4cL If a J|p=1+: |p5/2[642], |n3/2[631] state lay below the 1- level,
234NP5cL then this 1- state would preferably deexcite by cascade |g rays.
234NP cL $E: This level is very close to the ground state (but not ground
234NP2cL state, see above) because the deduced E from Q(|a) and E{-|a} is
234NP3cL nearly 0.
