Extreme nuclear shapes examined via giant dipole resonance lineshapes in hot light-mass systems

NUCLEAR REACTIONS 12C(20Ne, X), E=145, 160 MeV; 27Al(20Ne, X), E=160 MeV; measured Eγ, Iγ, γγ-coin. 32S, 47V; deduced highest spin and high energy excitations from the shapes of giant dipole resonances (GDR), strength functions and parameters using rotating liquid drop model (RLDM) and thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM). Calculated liquid drop model free energy surfaces, and equilibrium shapes as a function of quadrupole deformation parameters and spin. Possible connection to molecular structure of 16O+16O in the 32S superdeformed band.
