Hi,

There is the following glitch in the programming of the "Nuclear Wallet Card search" on you www site: The uncertainty in the half-life is omitted when ever there is more than two digits. For example that happens for nuclide "29116" which has its half-life transmitted as: "6.3 ms" rather than "6.3 ms +11.6 -2.5". (That error only occurs if the uncertainty format setting is in "standard format" rather than "nuclear data sheet format".
I would appreciate if you could send me the data file for the wallet cards in ascii format. That is because the data from the website has different amounts of information outputted depending on the settings (such as: the text files have less digits in the half-life values than the "webpage format" output with its constant 5 digits). I am hoping that the ascii will have all the available data and digits. I can receive that ascii file at my email address which is: xxxxxxx@yahoo.com or at my mail address on a floppy disk or CD (but not a DVD) at:

Response to Marc from Jag, 10/22/2007 (tuli at bnl.gov)

Dear Mr. Escalier,

For reference to the data please consult the evaluation for the relevant mass chain. Index to various mass numbers is given on page ii of any recent issue of Nuclear Data Sheets. For 14O, for example, see Nucl Physics A523, 1 (1991).
With best wishes,

With respect to the QA/QC question regarding adoption of the Wallet Cards for NMMSS reporting below, I wrote a paper for JNMM that discussed the reasoning behind the adoption of the Nuclear Wallet Cards

"The Effect of Standardizing Material Property Definitions on Nuclear Material Inventories in the U.S. Department of Energy", Shultz, John R., Journal of Nuclear Materials Management, Volume XXXIII, Number 2, Winter 2005

This paper would be of help to those that have QA/QC questions regarding the provenance of the information, and the traceability of the "standards".

Ms. Blennau,

I am an engineer and was hoping to obtain four printed copies each of the Nuclear Wallet Cards and Nuclear Wallet Cards for Radioactive Nulides for myself and collegues.
I was also wondering if there were any printed charts containing the data the Nutdat 2.2 program available. It is such an amazing amount of information shown so clearly.
Thank you very much.
Kind regards,

Samantha J. Lutz, P.E.

Response to Samantha from Marion, 2/13/2007 (blennau at bnl.gov)

Dear Samantha J. Lutz

We would be happy to send 4 of each to you. They will be mailed within a day or two.
Best Regards-

Marion Blennau

Dear Jag,

I am wondering if there is a new version of the printed Wallet Cards now available. And, also if there is still a supply of the version with radioactive nuclides. For over more than about 25 years, students in my graduate isotope geochemistry classes have enjoyed and greatly benefited from copies of the Wallet Cards, the blue version and the last time the new green version. Both of these compilations are incredibly useful and the small portable publication form is extremely handy and easily to carry around. My hat off to you and your comrades for producing it.
The last time I taught such a course was two years ago and at that time you sent the green version (as you explain in your original message). My students would again like to have copies of both versions, whatever may be available. If so, can you have your people sent them to me at the address below?
Thanks very much.

Regards, Ken

Response to Ken from jag, 1/9/2007 (tuli at bnl.gov)

Ken,

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, we have a revised (4/05) version of the Nuclear wallet Cards. Please let me know as to how many would you need this time. Unfortunately, we have run out of the green cards.
With best regards,

Jag

Hi Boris,

This is a follow-up to a phone message I just left for you. We are looking for a documented, reviewed, and approved data set for a waste management database. Do you have Verification and Validation (V&V) information for your data sets? I see that the 6th edition was approved by DOE-HQ as the "standard". Do you have documentation of this approval I could get along with any review DOE-HQ conducted? Is this the data set you would recommend? Would it be possible to get an electronic copy of this version of the data set for importation as a table into our database? Could I also get several hard copies of the wallet cards 6th edition and several copies of the latest version of the wallet cards? I would really appreciate any assistance you could give in this regard as our Quality Assurance Officer is giving me a lot of grief about documentation to support our current data set. Please feel free to contact me to discuss.
Thank you for your help,

Jared Dominick

-- Submitted by: Dominick 10/12/06 (dominick1 at llnl.gov)

Response to Dominick from Jag, 10/13/2006 (tuli at bnl.gov)

Dear Mr. Dominick,

Boris Pritychenko has forwarded to me your e-mail and his response to you. We do not have any more copies of the 6th edition of Nuclear Wallet Cards. However, the 6th edition can be downloaded from our web site. The main purpose of maintaining the 6th edition is to satisfy the needs of the DOE NMMSS. The reasons for their adopting the 6th edition as the standard are excerpted below from a DOE e-mail to us (John R. Shultz, Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability , Office of Security, DOE Headquarters): "The NMMSS is the inventory system for all DOE nuclear material. Periodically, the inventory numbers are revised due to radioactive decay of the items in the inventory. The constants used in the decay calculations were historically provided on a page in DOE M 474.1-2. A problem was noted in that the source of the decay constants was not readily apparent (inadequate tractability). Also, there was language in the manual that allowed facilities to use other printed sources for their decay constants, at their discretion. DOE HQ is re-writing the manual, and wants to standardize all DOE inventory reporting on one source - The National Nuclear Data Center Wallet Cards from BNL. To this end we ask for your support in several ways:
1. Please put a link on the NNDC front page so that DOE NMMSS users can easily find the pdf version of the wallet cards.
2. Maintain the integrity (e.g. archive the pdf file) of the January, 2000 version of the wallet cards. This version of the wallet cards will be "frozen" in time and will be the official, DOE, reference source for nuclear decay information.
3. We operate on a 4 year manual/order revision cycle, so we anticipate that we will continue to use the January, 2000 numbers for at least the next 4 years, and maybe for the next 8 years (until 2010). From our perspective, the decay estimates don't change that much year to year, so it will probably be necessary for the continued availability of the 6th edition, January 2000 wallet cards for some time to come.
We believe we should adopt the NNDC data to standardize the reporting of decay to NMMSS to minimize the possibly of generating false or erroneous inventory differences (e.g. due to bad decay information) and enable all DOE facilities to quickly and easily have access to the official standard (for example, ANSI and ASTM standards are sometimes out-of-print, hard to find, and cost money). "
I do not have any "verification and validation" information for the Wallet Cards except that most of the data presented is based on ENSDF which is based on peer-reviewed, mostly published evaluations.
I will be happy to send you Nuclear Wallet Cards, 7th edition, if you let me know how many you would need.
Regards,

Jag Tuli

Hi Jag,

Thank you for the information and your assistance with this. Could I please get 10 hard copies of the 7th edition. I downloaded a copy of the .pdf file. Is an electronic copy of the data available in a format amenable to loading directly into a database such as comma delimited text or other? If not we will need to hand enter all the information which would be very time consuming. I will check with our computer people to see what other formats would work. Thanks again, Jared Dominick

Greetings-

My name is Rae Walker and I work with the Texas Department of State Health Services - Radiation Emergency Preparedness. My primary job is to train first responders and emergency management in Radiological Emergency Preparedness. One of my contacts presented me with one of your Nuclear Wallet Cards and I would love to know how I can get my hands on some more!
Thank you,

Rae Walker

Response to Rae from Marion, 7/17/2006 (blennau at bnl.gov)

Dear Rae Walker,
We have 2 different Nuclear Wallet Cards: #1 - April 2005 (complete Z=1-118) #2 - March 2004 (NWC for Radioactive Nuclides for Homeland Security) The Homeland Security NWC is meant for 1st responders etc., but I can send either to you, or both. How many do you think you would need?
Regards-

Marion Blennau

We have around 25 immediate staff here working with emergency management and incident investigations....the April 2005 editions would work great for them, and the March 2004 edition for first responders would be great to pass along to our students. We average about 200-300 students a year in the 32-hour advanced rad class we teach, so that number would be nice. If this is too large a request, we could make due with what-ever amount you would be willing to provide us with. I can present the PDF version to our State Print Shop and see if we can print it ourselves (per your approval - and per our budgeting approval!) for next years' classes. Thank you for responding so quickly.

Hi Rae,
I will send 25 of the April 2005 edition and 300 of the March 2004 edition. We have plenty of the 2004 edition and will gladly send more of them for next year's classes --- please DO NOT print them yourselves. Just e-mail us again next year.

Are these tables available in Excel, or a comma-separated value data file format?

Response to George from Boris, 5/26/2006 (pritychenko at bnl.gov)

Nuclear Wallet Cards are available as booklets, ASCII format that can be exported to EXCEL. They are also distributed in the PDA format for people who use Palm Pilots.
Thank you,

Boris

Boris,

Please send a link to the ASCII file.
Thanks!

Response to George from Jag, 5/30/2006 (tuli at bnl.gov)

Attached is the ASCII file.

How should I rename this file to be able to open it in Excel or other application? I've tried some common filename extensions, but they don't seem to work. Thanks!

Response to George from Boris, 5/30/2006 (pritychenko at bnl.gov)

George,

You are absolutely correct that ".0504" is not recognized as a file type because it is simply a modification date. If you have an access to Linux machine you can easily change file type from "wallet.0504" to "wallet0504.txt" (simply rename it). Text file can be imported to EXCEL via "Data|Import External Data|Import Data ..." routine from the EXCEL menu. Please let me know if you have any problems.
Thank you,

Boris

-- Submitted by: George 5/31/06 (vargo at physicist.net )

Boris,

Successfully imported. Thanks for your and Jagdish's patience and assistance.

Dear Boris,

I found out that some of the signs in mass excess column in "7th Edition PDA Format 2005" for palm pilot are wrong. For example it says excess mass for 32S is +26.0157 which is wrong and it should be -26.0157. I did not go through the whole file to find out how many are wrong. I thought you may want to carefully examine the content of the "wallet2005.pdb" file. The "6th Edition PDA Format 2000" seems to be ok.
Sincerely,

Rahmat

Response to Rahmat from Boris, 3/24/2006 (pritychenko at bnl.gov)

Thank you for pointing out file import error, it is fixed now and a new zip is created. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to verify 5400 lines of nuclear data, so we have to rely on our users help.
Thank you again,

Boris

Mr. Tuli,

I was able to get some more detailed information from you web site. However, it is not quite what we need. The message below contains a response from one of our database administrators. Is it possible to retrieve a table containing: nuclide, half-life, and half-life units; with one row per nuclide?

William D. Webber

-- Submitted by: William 3/15/06 (wd.webber at pnl.gov)

Response to William from Jag, 3/16/2006 (tuli at bnl.gov)

Jag Tuli responded by sending ASCII file for Wallet Cards with an explanation that there is a separate record for each decay mode and you may just retain the first record if the decay modes are not important.

Dr. Tuli,

I have shown several co-workers my copy of your Nuclear Wallet Cards that you sent me a couple years ago, and they are interested in obtaining their own copies. I did find the PDF version on the web, but we would like to get hard copies, as well. Can you tell me how I can order a dozen or so copies, and how much they would cost?
Thanks!

Marion,

I hate to keep bothering you, Marion, but the response to the latest batch of wallet cards was overwhelming, and I have more people asking for them! (Perhaps it was because I pointed out how valuable they are as a conversation starter in bars?!?) Anyway, if you could, please send me another 20 copies each of the "Nuclear Wallet Cards" and the "Nuclear Wallet Cards for Radioactive Nuclides". That should take care of the remaining folks who want them, plus our summer interns. My address is listed below.
Thanks again!

Bonjour,

I am Maître de Conférences at the University Paris VII- Denis Diderot, and had your e-mail through Ms Bourgeois and Audi from IPN-Orsay laboratory. I am teaching the Nuclear Physics to students. I habituate them to use the Nuclear Wallet Cards in the form of the blue booklet of year 2000 during this time and after, I recover the sample of booklets (except when the student becomes passionately fond of Nuclear Physics and choose to go deeply in this matter .) But this years They are more numerous than last year and I do not have enough booklets. Would it possible that you send me, by post, 20 such blue booklets ? More if possible, of course ? ( Not the green ones where there are only the radioactive nuclides) Or , if it exist, a new version of the complete booklet, in 20 exemplaries ? You would be so very kind , if it is possible, to send that at : Prof. Yvette PONS Université de Paris VII- LPNHE Tour 33 - Rez de Chaussée 4 Place Jussieu 75252 Paris Cedex 05 Thank you very much for your help.
