Epperson. 1428 1451 47 1428 1451 48 INCIDENT NEUTRON ENERGIES > 20 MeV 1428 1451 49 1428 1451 50 The ENDF/B-VI Release 5 evaluation extends to 20 MeV and 1428 1451 51 includes cross sections and energy-angle data for all 1428 1451 52 significant reactions. The present evauation utilizes a more 1428 1451 53 compact composite reaction spectrum representation above 20 MeV 1428 1451 54 in order to reduce the length of the file. No essential data for 1428 1451 55 applications is lost with this representation. 1428 1451 56 The evaluation above 20 MeV utilizes MF=6, MT=5 to represent 1428 1451 57 all reaction data. Production cross sections and emission 1428 1451 58 spectra are given for neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, 1428 1451 59 alpha particles, gamma rays, and all residual nuclides produced 1428 1451 60 (A>5) in the reaction chains. To summarize, the ENDF sections 1428 1451 61 with non-zero data above En = 20 MeV are: 1428 1451 62 1428 1451 63 MF=3 MT= 1 Total Cross Section 1428 1451 64 MT= 2 Elastic Scattering Cross Section 1428 1451 65 MT= 3 Nonelastic Cross Section 1428 1451 66 MT= 5 Sum of Binary (n,n') and (n,x) Reactions 1428 1451 67 1428 1451 68 MF=4 MT= 2 Elastic Angular Distributions 1428 1451 69 1428 1451 70 MF=6 MT= 5 Production Cross Sections and Energy-Angle 1428 1451 71 Distributions for Emission Neutrons, Protons, 1428 1451 72 Deuterons, Tritons, and Alphas; and Angle- 1428 1451 73 Integrated Spectra for Gamma Rays and Residual 1428 1451 74 1428 1451 75 Nuclei That Are Stable Against Particle Emission 1428 1451 76 1428 1451 77 The evaluation is based on nuclear model calculations that 1428 1451 78 have been benchmarked to experimental data, especially for n + 1428 1451 79 Si28 and p + Si28 reactions [Ch97]. We use the GNASH code system 1428 1451 80 [Yo92], which utilizes Hauser-Feshbach statistical, 1428 1451 81 preequilibrium and direct-reaction theories. Spherical optical 1428 1451 82 model calculations are used to obtain particle transmission 1428 1451 83 coefficients for the Hauser-Feshbach calculations, as well as 1428 1451 84 for the elastic neutron angular distributions. 1428 1451 85 Cross sections and spectra for producing individual residual 1428 1451 86 nuclei are included for reactions. The energy-angle-correlations 1428 1451 87 for all outgoing particles are based on Kalbach systematics 1428 1451 88 [Ka88]. 1428 1451 89 A model was developed to calculate the energy distributions of 1428 1451 90 all recoil nuclei in the GNASH calculations [Ch96]. The recoil 1428 1451 91 energy distributions are represented in the laboratory system in 1428 1451 92 MT=5, MF=6, and are given as isotropic in the lab system. All 1428 1451 93 other data in MT=5,MF=6 are given in the center-of-mass system. 1428 1451 94 This method of representation utilizes the LCT=3 option approved 1428 1451 95 at the November, 1996, CSEWG meeting. 1428 1451 96 1428 1451 97 Preequilibrium corrections were performed in the course of the 1428 1451 98 GNASH calculations using the exciton model of Kalbach [Ka77, 1428 1451 99 Ka85], validated by comparison with calculations using Feshbach, 1428 1451 100 Kerman, Koonin (FKK) theory [Ch93]. Discrete level data from 1428 1451 101 nuclear data sheets were matched to continuum level densities 1428 1451 102 using the formulation of Ignatyuk [Ig75] and pairing and shell 1428 1451 103 parameters from the Cook [Co67] analysis. Neutron and charged- 1428 1451 104 particle transmission coefficients were obtained from the 1428 1451 105 optical potentials, as discussed below. Gamma-ray transmission 1428 1451 106 coefficients were calculated using the Kopecky-Uhl model [Ko90]. 1428 1451 107 1428 1451 108 DETAILS OF THE n + 29SI ANALYSIS 1428 1451 109 1428 1451 110 The neutron total cross section above 20 MeV was obtained by 1428 1451 111 evaluating the nat-Si experimental data, with a particular 1428 1451 112 emphasis on the high-accuracy Los Alamos measurements by Finlay 1428 1451 113 [Fi93]. The Si-28 total cross section, based on nat-Si data, was 1428 1451 114 scaled by 1.02036 (an A**2/3 factor) for Si-29. 1428 1451 115 The Madland global medium-energy optical potential [Ma88] was 1428 1451 116 used for neutrons above 46 MeV, and the Wilmore-Hodgson [Wi64] 1428 1451 117 potential was used for lower neutron energies. The Madland 1428 1451 118 global medium-energy optical potential was used for protons 1428 1451 119 above 28 MeV, and the Beccheti-Greenlees [Be69] potential was 1428 1451 120 used for lower proton energies. In both cases the transition 1428 1451 121 region to the Madland potential was chosen to approximately give 1428 1451 122 continuity in the reaction cross section. For deuterons, the 1428 1451 123 Perey [Pe63] global potential was used; for alpha particles the 1428 1451 124 MacFadden [Ma66] potential was used; and for tritons the 1428 1451 125 Beccheti-Greenlees [Be71] potential was used. 1428 1451 126 While the above optical potentials did describe the 1428 1451 127 experimental proton nonelastic cross section data fairly well, 1428 1451 128 we modified the theoretical predictions slightly to better agree 1428 1451 129 with the measurements, and renormalized the transmission 1428 1451 130 coefficients accordingly. In addition to using Si nonelastic 1428 1451 131 proton cross section measurements, we also were guided by p+Al 1428 1451 132 nonelastic data, scaled by A**2/3. The Si-29 nonelastic cross 1428 1451 133 section was taken by scaling the evaluated Si-28 value by 1428 1451 134 1.02036 (an A**2/3 factor). 1428 1451 135 Due to the small abundance of 29Si in nat-Si, a sophisticated 1428 1451 136 DWBA treatment of inelastic scattering using a coupled-channels 1428 1451 137 calculation was not undertaken (the rotational-vibrational 1428 1451 138 collective structure of this nucleus is rather complicated). 1428 1451 139 Instead, values for inelastic scattering obtained from the 1428 1451 140 JENDL-3 evaluation (H.Kitazawa et al.), for the 5/2+ (2.03 MeV) 1428 1451 141 and 3/2+ (2.43 MeV) were extrapolated to higher energies using a 1428 1451 142 1/E variation. 1428 1451 143 The same preequilibrium input parameters were used as for Si- 1428 1451 144 28, which was benchmarked against (n,xz) data from the Louvain 1428 1451 145 group at 63 MeV, and against unpublished (n,xp) data by Haight 1428 1451 146 et al. for neutrons up to 50 MeV. The TNG 1428 1451 159 code provides energy and angular distributions of particles 1428 1451 160 emitted in the compound and pre-compound reactions, ensures 1428 1451 161 consistency among all reactions, and maintains energy balance. 1428 1451 162 Evaluation work was completed in 1989, except for MT=3, 1428 1451 163 MF=1,2,3,102 which were completed May 1996. The latter results 1428 1451 164 incorporated a new resonance region analysis. Uncertainty files 1428 1451 165 are provided for all FILE 3 cross sections using methodology 1428 1451 166 described in Hetrick et al.
