Perkins, 425 1451 28 E.F. Plechaty, and R.J. Howerton (LLNL) 425 1451 29 425 1451 30 GENERAL COMMENTS 425 1451 31 The neutron energy range covered extends from .00001 eV to 425 1451 32 20 MeV. In addition to elastic scattering which of course is 425 1451 33 everywhere energetically possible, the following reactions have 425 1451 34 thresholds at energies less than 20 MeV [Ho1970]: 425 1451 35 425 1451 36 reaction threshold (mev) 425 1451 37 n,2n 1.85 425 1451 38 n,p 14.26 425 1451 39 n,np 18.76 425 1451 40 n,d 16.29 425 1451 41 n,nd 18.55 425 1451 42 n,t 11.60 425 1451 43 n,nt 19.65 425 1451 44 n,alpha 0.67 425 1451 45 n,n alpha 2.74 425 1451 46 n,gamma exoergic 425 1451 47 425 1451 48 For the (n,np), (n,nd), and (n,nt) reactions, there are no 425 1451 49 measurements and since the thresholds are sufficiently high, 425 1451 50 these cross sections are assumed to be negligible. The 425 1451 51 (n,n alpha) reaction is a decay mode for the (n,2n) reaction 425 1451 52 since 5He is unstable, decaying immediately to a neutron and an 425 1451 53 alpha particle. The inelastic scattering reaction is also a 425 1451 54 decay mode for the (n,2n) reaction since the 9Be* recoil nucleus 425 1451 55 always decays to the final end products of a neutron and two 425 1451 56 alpha particles. 425 1451 57 The selection of the cross sections for elastic scattering, 425 1451 58 (n,2n), (n,p), (n,d), (n,t), (n, alpha), (n, gamma), and the 425 1451 59 (n,x gamma) reaction is discussed below. 425 1451 60 425 1451 61 ELASTIC SCATTERING CROSS SECTION 425 1451 62 The free atom cross section is used for all energies below 425 1451 63 the upper limit of the molecular binding energy (about 10 eV). 425 1451 64 This is effectively only the nuclear part of the cross section of 425 1451 65 a stationary target at zero Kelvin. It is strongly emphasized 425 1451 66 that the numbers are meaningless in the absence of a proper 425 1451 67 thermal treatment by either the processing code or the neutronics 425 1451 68 code which uses these numbers. They are likewise meaningless 425 1451 69 if the materials for which they are to be used are bound in 425 1451 70 molecules unless molecular binding is taken into account. 425 1451 71 The scattering cross section was taken equal to 6.15 barns 425 1451 72 [Mu1981] from 0.00001 eV to 0.01 MeV. From .01 MeV to the 425 1451 73 (n,alpha) threshold at 0.67 MeV, the elastic scattering cross 425 1451 74 section is equal to the total cross section since the (n,gamma) 425 1451 75 cross section is negligible. The cross section was based on 425 1451 76 experimental data [63, 92, 720, 772, 1002]. 425 1451 77 Above the (n,alpha) threshold, the scattering cross section 425 1451 78 was taken as the difference between the total and the nonelastic, 425 1451 79 with the nonelastic being equal to the sum of its parts. Up to 2 425 1451 80 MeV, the total cross section was based on the previously 425 1451 81 mentioned data, and those from [72, 336, 1642]. From 3.2-4.4 425 1451 82 MeV, the Argonne total cross section data was used [Sm1988]. 425 1451 83 From 4.5-10. MeV the Argonne elastic cross section data was used 425 1451 84 [Sm1988]. Also above 2. MeV, we relied on the results of Johnson 425 1451 85 [3088] over the 2.7 MeV resonance, and Foster [750] and the 425 1451 86 elastic scattering data from Hogue [4113] and Drake [4473] up to 425 1451 87 15 MeV. For incident neutron energies from 15 to 20 MeV, the 425 1451 88 data from Cook [107], Peterson [673], and Fossan [682] were used. 425 1451 89 425 1451 90 ELASTIC SCATTERING ANGULAR DISTRIBUTIONS 425 1451 91 (NORMALIZED PROBABILITIES) 425 1451 92 Up to 7 MeV, there are experimental differential scattering 425 1451 93 data [121, 151, 231, 296, 500, 571, 945, 1643, 1645, 1646, 1647] 425 1451 94 which were used to determine the normalized probabilities. Below 425 1451 95 the (n,2n) threshold, the total scattering data are equivalent 425 1451 96 to those for elastic scattering. The change in shape of the 425 1451 97 angular distribution going through the scattering resonances was 425 1451 98 taken into account. From 4.5-10 MeV the Argonne differential 425 1451 99 elastic scattering cross sections were used [SM1988]. From 6-15 425 1451 100 MeV, the results of [4113, 4473, 402, 2585, 3106] were also 425 1451 101 used. A smooth extrapolation was made to 20 MeV. 425 1451 102 425 1451 103 (N,2N) 425 1451 104 The evaluation for the 9Be (n,2n) reaction is described in 425 1451 105 detail in Perkins [Pe1985]. A Monte Carlo technique was used and 425 1451 106 the calculated spectra were compared against recent double 425 1451 107 differential cross section measurements. At each incident 425 1451 108 neutron energy, 5,000,000 events were sampled, resulting in 425 1451 109 10,000,000 secondary neutrons. The (n,2n) reaction was described 425 1451 110 by the following four events: 425 1451 111 Be9(n,n1)Be9*(n2)Be8*(alpha1)alpha2, 425 1451 112 Be9(n,n1)Be9*(alpha1)He5*(n2)alpha2, 425 1451 113 Be9(n,alpha1)He6*(n1)He5*(n2)alpha2, 425 1451 114 Be9(n,He5*1)He5*2, 425 1451 115 He5*1(n1)alpha1, 425 1451 116 He5*2(n2)alpha2. 425 1451 117 Where, n is neutron, alpha is alpha particle, and * denotes an 425 1451 118 excited state. Wide level transitions were considered as 425 1451 119 required. 425 1451 120 425 1451 121 TOTAL (N,2N) CROSS SECTION 425 1451 122 The total (n,2n) cross section was based on the data from 425 1451 123 [683, 763, 3320, 4473, 4871, 5660]. At 14 MeV, the weighted 425 1451 124 mean of the eight values measured between 1958-1963 was also 425 1451 125 considered. The resulting curve is similar to that used in 425 1451 126 ENDF/B-V. 425 1451 127 425 1451 128 (N,2N) DOUBLE DIFFERENTIAL SPECTRA 425 1451 129 The calculated double differential spectra were compared 425 1451 130 to 51 measurements between 3.25 and 15.4 MeV: 425 1451 131 [4871] (3.25-15.4 MEV), Drake [4473] (5.9-14.2 MeV), and 425 1451 132 Takahashi [Ta1982]. See also [Ta83] (14 MeV). Comparisons were 425 1451 133 made after weighing the calculated results with the experimental 425 1451 134 resolution function. The final calculated spectra were then 425 1451 135 smoothed and thinned. This yielded double differential spectra 425 1451 136 for both the secondary neutrons and the secondary alpha 425 1451 137 particles. 425 1451 138 425 1451 139 (N,P) CROSS SECTION 425 1451 140 This cross section is entirely for the (n,p0) reaction and 425 1451 141 was based on the data from Alburger [913] and Augustson [3492]. 425 1451 142 It was smoothly extrapolated from 15.5 to 20 MeV. The proton was 425 1451 143 assumed isotropic in its center of mass system. 425 1451 144 425 1451 145 (N,D) CROSS SECTION 425 1451 146 This cross section is entirely for the (n,d0) reaction and 425 1451 147 was based on the data between 15.5 and 19 MeV reported in Scobel 425 1451 148 [4841]. The deuteron was assumed isotropic in its center-of-mass 425 1451 149 system. 425 1451 150 425 1451 151 (N,T) CROSS SECTION 425 1451 152 The cross section for the (n,t) reaction is based on a 425 1451 153 (n,t0) and a(n,t1) component, which proceed through the 0. and 425 1451 154 the 0.477 MeV levels in 7Li respectively. The total (n,t) cross 425 1451 155 section near 14 mev was determined from [496, 3996, 5722]. 425 1451 156 The (n,t1) cross section was based on the work in Dietrich 425 1451 157 [5529] and smoothly extrapolated from 15 to 20 MeV. The 425 1451 158 resonance near threshold is consistent with structure in the 425 1451 159 compound system 10Be. 425 1451 160 Both tritons were assumed isotropic in their center-of-mass 425 1451 161 systems. 425 1451 162 425 1451 163 (N,ALPHA) CROSS SECTION 425 1451 164 The cross section was based on the measurements reported 425 1451 165 in Stelson [160], Vasilev [494], and Bass [733] up to neutron 425 1451 166 energies of 8.6 MeV. It was then tied into the four values given 425 1451 167 at 14 MeV by Battat [86], Myachkova [650], Paic [2367], and 425 1451 168 Perroud [Pe1978]. It was then extrapolated to 20 MeV. Note 425 1451 169 that the measured cross section is to 6He (0. MeV) which beta 425 1451 170 decays to 6Li; higher states in 6He decay to alpha + 2n. 425 1451 171 The alpha particle angular distribution was taken as isotropic 425 1451 172 in the center of mass system at threshold. At 14.1 MeV the data 425 1451 173 from the measurement of ref; 4351 was used; this distribution 425 1451 174 was also used at 20 MeV. 425 1451 175 425 1451 176 (N,GAMMA) CROSS SECTION 425 1451 177 The cross section was assumed to be 1/v below 100 eV with 425 1451 178 a 2200 m/sec cross section of 8.6 mb. This is in agreement with 425 1451 179 the CSEWG dosimetry and activation files. It was then 425 1451 180 extrapolated linearly on a log-log basis to 0.1 mb at 1 keV and 425 1451 181 then held constant at this value up to 20 MeV. 425 1451 182 425 1451 183 (N,X GAMMA) CROSS SECTION 425 1451 184 Gamma rays in 9Be are produced by the (n,gamma) and the (n,t) 425 1451 185 reactions. At thermal energies, Rasmussen [2415] quotes gamma 425 1451 186 ray energies of 0.8535, 2.59, 3.368, 3.444, 5.958 and 6.81 MeV 425 1451 187 and the corresponding (n,x gamma) cross sections. The photon 425 1451 188 spectrum from this work was used at all neutron energies. 425 1451 189 The multiplicity varied with neutron energy as m(e) = 425 1451 190 m(0)(e(cm)+Q)/Q, where m(0) is the multiplicity at thermal and 425 1451 191 Q is the (n,gamma) Q value. This combination of spectra and 425 1451 192 multiplicity conserves energy. There are no doubt other levels 425 1451 193 in 10Be with energies greater than 6.81 MeV are excited as the 425 1451 194 incident neutron energy is increased. The energies of the higher 425 1451 195 states have not yet been determined so we use this artifact to 425 1451 196 conserve energy.
