Abstract

The high excitation energy region, Ex>15 MeV, of C12 was probed using the C12(He3,He3)3α reaction. The He3 nucleus was detected using a particle identification telescope and was used to reconstruct the excitation energy of C12. The 3α decay of C12 was observed via the detection of two of the three final-state α particles in an array of two double-sided silicon strip detectors. The present analysis selected decays via Be8gs+α. Evidence is found for a series of states at 16.3(0.2), 17.2(0.2), 18.4(0.2), 19.7(0.2), 22.2(0.3), and 25.1(0.3) MeV.
