Collective states in binuclear systems and their effect on fusion of heavy atomic nuclei

Abstract

Quantum description of near-barrier fusion of heavy nuclei with allowance for the collective degrees of freedom was performed by the strong channel-coupling method. It is shown that the structure of the barrier-distribution function derived from experimental data is due to the properties of effective adiabatic potentials for the most populated vibrational states of a single nucleus perturbed by the presence of another nucleus.
