Abstract

We report about an attempt to carry out an exclusive measurement of the GDR decay gamma rays from the compound nucleus194Au. The compound nucleus194Au was populated at 84 and 65 MeV beam energies. A differential technique was used for the 84 MeV data to extract the GDR gamma rays almost entirely from the compound nucleus corresponding to a narrow range of excitation energy in the phase space. Selection of angular momentum region was achieved by detecting low energy discrete gamma rays using a multiplicity filter. The GDR spectra corresponding to both the beam energies were measured at two different angles with respect to the beam direction for measuring the angular anisotropy. The experiment was aimed to search for a rare non-collective prolate shape as has been predicted in literature. We discuss the results in light of the statistical model fits of the GDR spectra and the analysis of the measured angular anisotropies.
