Short-lived natural radionuclides as tracers in hydrogeological studies – A review

Fundamental approaches to the study of groundwater rely on investigating the spatial and temporal distribution of stable and radioactive isotopes and other anthropogenic compounds in natural waterbodies. The most often used tracers for estimating groundwater flow paths and residence times, groundwater/surface water interaction as well as tracing chemical (contamination) sources include stable isotopes of water (δ ¹⁸O and δ ²H), radiocarbon (¹⁴C; t_1/2 = 5730 a), tritium (³H; t_1/2 = 12.43 a) as well as unreactive fluorine-containing gases (e.g., chlorofluorocarbons CCl₃F or CFC-11; CCl₂F₃ or CFC-12; C₂Cl₃F₃ or CFC-113; and SF₆). While gas tracers are usually referred to as transient tracers and are appropriate for investigating modern flow systems, the isotopic tracers are often used to investigated paleo or regional flow systems. Stable isotopes of water can also be used to investigate groundwater/surface water interactions. Another, thus far been less frequently used group of groundwater tracers, are cosmo- and geo- genic short-lived radioisotopes. These isotopes are uniquely suited for studying a wide range of groundwater problems that have short time scales including high aquifer vulnerability to quantitative and qualitative impacts and groundwater discharge to surface waters. Here, we discuss and compare the applications of radio‑sulphur (³⁵S; half-life t_1/2 = 87 d), radio‑beryllium (⁷Be; t_1/2 = 53 d), radio‑phosphorus (^32/33P; combined t_1/2 = 33 d), natural tritium (³H; t_1/2 = 12.43 a), radon (²²²Rn; t_1/2 = 3.8 d) and short-lived radium (^224/223Ra; combined t_1/2 = 5.2 d). The paper discusses the principles of the individual tracer methods, focusing on the isotopes' input functions or values, on sampling techniques, and on methods of analyses. Case studies that applied a combined use of the tracers are referred to for readers who wish to learn more about the application of the so far underused cosmo- and geo- genic radioisotopes as aquatic tracers.
Determination of Tritium-Helium-3 differential cross-section in the energy range between 0.6 MeV and 3.3 MeV for tritium depth profiling in solids

The differential cross-section for the ³He+³H nuclear reaction was measured in a thin tritiated PdTi film that was deposited on a Si wafer. The sample was loaded with ³H₂ gas at a temperature of 300 °C and at a pressure of 1.8 bar. The total activity of the sample, measured by the liquid scintillation technique, was found to be 395 MBq. Two peaks were observed in the spectrum of the thick Si detector, corresponding to the ³H(³He,d)⁴He and ³H(³He,p)⁵He reaction channels. The differential cross-section was determined for the energy range of the ³He beam from 0.6 to 3.4 MeV, at three scattering angles of 125, 135 and 155°. The differential cross-section for the first channel remained almost constant within the measured energy range, while the cross-section for the second channel increased with energy. In both cases, the cross-sections reached their maximum value at the lowest scattering angle measured. The differential cross-sections were verified using a thick solid tritiated tungsten target. For assessing the tritium depth profile, only the reaction channel ³H(³He,d)⁴He can be utilized.

The ${}^{7}{Li} (p, n)^{7} Be$ reaction is widely used as neutron source for neutron induced reaction cross section measurements, and for ⁷Be radioactive source production. There are two prominent structures in the excitation function, a narrow resonance between $E_{p} = 2.2 - 2.3$ MeV, and a broad peak, around $E_{p} = 5$ MeV. There are tension between the experimental data sets both in the position and the width of this latter structure, as well as in the absolute scale of the data. In the present work the ${}^{7}{Li} (p, n)^{7} Be$ reaction is investigated using the activation technique, with the aim of providing comprehensive cross section data covering the second structure and connecting prior literature data sets. The irradiations were performed with the Atomki cyclotron accelerator with pairs of thin foil targets, thus with precisely controlled reaction energy in the range of $E_{p} = 3.5 - 13$ MeV. After the irradiations the activity of the samples was measured using a high-purity germanium detector. The energy uncertainty of the new data points is much smaller than in any of the previous works, while the cross section uncertainty is comparable with the most precise literature data. A consistent data set was obtained connecting the most recent and most precise literature data sets. With the new data the absolute magnitude of the ${}^{7}{Li} (p, n)^{7} Be$ reaction cross section is constrained and became more precise.
Hyperon-nucleon interaction constrained by light hypernuclei

Ab initio structure calculations for p-shell hypernuclei have recently become accessible through extensions of nuclear many-body methods, such as the no-core shell model, in combination with hyperon-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory. However, the low-energy constants in these hyperon-nucleon interactions are poorly constraint due to the very limited amount of experimental scattering data available. We present a hyperon-nucleon interaction that is additionally constrained by experimental ground-state and spectroscopic data for selected p-shell hypernuclei and, thus, optimized for hypernuclear structure calculations. We show that the previous overestimation of the hyperon separation energies in the p-shell is remedied and discuss the significantly improved description of the
isotopic chain. We further discuss the uncertainty quantification for hypernuclear observables on the many-body level, obtained through a novel machine-learning tool.
