Abstract

The energies and intensities of prompt gamma rays produced by the radiative capture of thermal neutrons have been compiled and evaluated for elements with atomic numbers Z=1–30. These elements are important for many applications, including well logging, planetary remote sensing, and other analytic and diagnostic applications. Experimental data for 70 isotopes from 1H to 68Zn were compiled and evaluated. Published thermal-capture cross sections were used to convert the isotopic gamma-ray intensities to elemental intensities. The evaluated energies and absolute intensities of these capture gamma rays are presented by element and a subset is sorted by gamma-ray energy. The literature has been covered to August 2000.

The design of that neutron-capturing device was simple, but the utility ratio of the neutrons was low and resulted in a relatively low high-energy gamma-ray yield. This is because hydrogen in the paraffin has a large cross-section to capture thermal neutrons (0.33 barn) [9]. Most moderated thermal neutrons are absorbed by hydrogen before arriving to the layer of the neutron-capturing material.

Mercuric acetate and cadmium nitrate with different mass were dissolved separately in the deionized water and mixed with the quartz and polythene. Some prompt gamma ray energies and microscopic absorption cross-sections of major elements used in the experiment are listed in Table 1 (Reddy and Frankle, 2002). In this study, 8.484 MeV gamma ray emitted from Cd and 5.967 MeV gamma ray emitted from Hg were used to calculate the MDC value.
