Abstract

The location of low-lying states in the very neutron-rich isotope 34Mg has been determined for the first time. In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy was performed using a two-step fragmentation reaction. Two strong γ-lines were observed at 660(10) keV and 1460(20) keV, which are tentatively attributed to the 2+1→0+g.s. and 4+1→2+1 transitions in 34Mg, respectively. These tentative assignments lead to a very low energy for the 2+1 state and a large E(4+1)/E(2+1) ratio of about 3.2, in agreement with the expectations for a well deformed isotope.
