Abstract

Experimental studies on nuclear sizes and related topics are reviewed. The recent development of radioactive nuclear beams has enabled us to study the nuclear sizes of unstable nuclei. The nuclear sizes for unstable nuclei, which are deduced by the interaction cross sections and reaction cross sections, are mainly reviewed. From a theoretical view point, a Glauber-model analysis is important to deduce nuclear sizes. Other related topics, such as halo and skin from a nuclear size point of view are also discussed.

12C+12C scattering as the reference system for reaction cross section

In our previous paper, we tested the chiral (Kyushu) folding model for ¹²C+¹²C scattering, since the profile function in the Glauber mode is constructed for the system. We found that the folding model is reliable for reaction cross sections $σ_{R}$ in $30 ≲ E_{lab} ≲ 100 MeV$ and $250 ≲ E_{lab} ≲ 400 MeV$ . Accurate data are available for ¹²C scattering on ⁹Be, ¹²C, ²⁷Al targets in $30 ≲ E_{lab} ≲ 400 MeV$ .
We determine matter radius $r_{m} (exp)$ of ¹²C from the accurate $σ_{R} (exp)$ , using the Kyushu $g$ -matrix folding model.
Our result is $r_{m}^{12} (exp) = 2.352 \pm 0.013$ fm for ¹²C. The model is applied for the accurate data on ¹²C+²⁷ Al scattering, and yields $r_{m} (exp) = 2.936 \pm 0.012$ fm for ²⁷Al.
Our conclusion is that $r_{m} (exp) = 2.352 \pm 0.013$ fm agrees with $r_{m} (exp) = 2.35 \pm 0.02$ fm determined from interaction cross sections by Tanihata et al.
