Neutron capture on 179Ta

Abstract

The (n,γ) cross section of the unstable isotope 179Ta (t1/2=1.82±0.03yr) has been measured at thermal energies by means of the activation method. The 180Hf(p,2n) reaction was used for the production of 179Ta,and thin samples of 4 and 20 ng were obtained by the electrospraying technique. From irradiations with and without Cd absorbers the thermal cross section σth=932±62b and the corresponding resonance integral Ires=1216±69b could be determined.
