Abstract

This evaluation presents data for all nuclei with mass number A = 174, which includes level schemes deduced from radioactive decay and nuclear reaction studies.

Electric monopole transitions in nuclei

Electric monopole, $E 0$ transitions in nuclei are reviewed. Values for $ρ^{2} (E 0) \times 1 0^{3}$ , $X (E 0 / E 2)$ and $q_{K}^{2} (E 0 / E 2)$ are tabulated. Particular attention is paid to a complete re-evaluation of all reported values starting from raw input data, i.e. none of the adopted values are taken from the literature without evaluation. Values for $J \to J$ transitions for $J = 0$ , $J = 2$ , and some selected $J = 4$ transitions are given. The $2 \to 2$ transitions involve evaluation of $δ (E 2 / M 1)$ mixing ratios. These were usually assessed from values given in ENSDF. Asymmetric uncertainties and multiple sources of error are handled using up-to-date, Monte Carlo-based procedures. All conversion coefficients and electronic factors are taken from the latest tabulations. As a second major component of the review, a detailed illustration of the association of $E 0$ transition strengths with the manifestation of shape coexistence in nuclei is made. This demonstrates that large $E 0$ transition strengths are a strong indication of the presence of shape coexistence in nuclei. In many cases this is shown to be directly corroborated by $B (E 2)$ data. Some details of experimental techniques behind the input data are given. The connection between $E 0$ transition strengths and mean-square charge radii, isotope and isomer shifts is sketched.
A search for rare and induced nuclear decays in hafnium

A measurement of hafnium foil using a modified ultra-low-background high purity detector with optimized sample-to-detector geometry was performed at Laboratori Nazionale del Gran Sasso. Radiopurity of the stock Hf foil was studied in detail, in addition to an analysis of data collected over 310 days to search for rare processes that can occur in natural Hf isotopes. Firstly, limits on alpha decays of all natural Hf isotopes to the first excited state of the daughter nuclides were established in the range of 10¹⁶–10¹⁸a (90% C.L.). Secondly, a search for modes of double electron capture and electron capture with positron emission in ${}^{174}{Hf}$ was performed, yielding half-life limits 10¹⁶–10¹⁸a (90% C.L.). Lastly, novel dark matter-induced nuclear excitations in hafnium isotopes were investigated. For dark matter with 1 TeV/ $c^{2}$ mass, leading limits on the inelastic dark matter–nucleon cross section are set for mass splittings in the range 428 keV $< δ_{M} <$ 473 keV in the adopted model framework.
Nuclear structure of even-even Ytterbium isotopes 166−176Yb

A nuclear phenomenological study of the even-even Ytterbium Isotopes ${}^{166 - 176}{Yb}$ was carried out, in the framework of the interacting Boson model-1 (IBM-1) and modified soft rotor formula (MSRF). The energy levels for ground-state, γ- and β-rotational bands were calculated. Also, electric transition probability B (E2) for these isotopes was calculated. Furthermore, the intrinsic coherent state was used to find the potential energy surfaces. The staggering effect of a γ-band, which is a function of spin, was analyzed. The results obtained by applying the IBM-1 and the MSRF are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data for most of the nuclear states.
First search for 2ε and εβ+ decay of 174Hf

The first ever search for 2ε and $ε β^{+}$ decay of ¹⁷⁴Hf was realized using a high-pure sample of hafnium (with mass 179.8 g) and the ultra low-background HPGe-detector system located 225 m underground. After 75 days of data taking no indication of the double beta decay transitions could be detected but lower limits for the half-lives of the different channels and modes of the decays were set on the level of $\lim T_{1 / 2} \sim 10^{16} – 10^{18}$ a.
Lifetime measurements of excited states in 163W and the implications for the anomalous B(E2) ratios in transitional nuclei

This letter reports lifetime measurements of excited states in the odd-N nucleus ¹⁶³W using the recoil-distance Doppler shift method to probe the core polarising effect of the $i_{13 / 2}$ neutron orbital on the underlying soft triaxial even-even core. The ratio B(E2: $21 / 2^{+} \to 17 / 2^{+}$ )/B(E2: $17 / 2^{+} \to 13 / 2^{+}$ ) is consistent with the predictions of the collective rotational model. The deduced B(E2) values provide insights into the validity of collective model predictions for heavy transitional nuclei and a geometric origin for the anomalous B(E2) ratios observed in nearby even-even nuclei is proposed.
