Available nuclear structure information for all nuclei with mass numbers A = 248,252,256,260 and 264 are presented. Various decay and reaction data are evaluated and compared. Adopted data, levels, spin, parity and configuration assignments are given.

Comparison of Cf-252 thin-film sources prepared by evaporation or self-transfer

The source surface areas were determined using the methods described in Section 2.2 or 2.3. The energy resolution, ER, of each source was determined by identifying a ROI in the alpha spectra, in this case the 6.118 MeV alpha peak for Cf-252 (Haire, 2011; Akovali, 1999), and then taking the ratio of the FWHM of the measured energy peak to the known peak's maximum energy. The loss factor, L, was calculated as the ratio of the theoretical alpha particle energy to the measured alpha particle energy for the ROI.
Thin-film sources containing Cf-252 were prepared by two techniques—evaporation and self-transfer—to determine whether sources prepared by simple evaporation work as well as sources prepared by self-transfer for alpha particle studies. The sources were analyzed by alpha and gamma spectroscopy. Results indicate that self-transfer sources exhibit less alpha energy straggling and alpha energy loss than evaporative sources. Fission fragments may also self-transfer, and sources made by self-transfer may need time to decay before reaching radioactive equilibrium.
Systematics of the α-decay fine structure in even-even nuclei

We describe $α$ -transitions to low-lying states in even–even nuclei with $Z > 50, N > 82$ using the Coherent State Model (CSM). We reproduce the energy levels and electromagnetic transition rates between the states of the ground band employing two parameters, namely the deformation parameter and the strength of the harmonic CSM Hamiltonian. The B(E2) values are described in terms of an effective charge which depends linearly on the deformation parameter. The treatment of the $α$ -emission process is based on an $α$ –daughter interaction containing a monopole component, calculated through a double folding procedure with a M3Y interaction plus a repulsive core simulating the Pauli principle, and a quadrupole–quadrupole (QQ) interaction. The decaying states are identified with the lowest narrow outgoing resonances obtained through the coupled channels method. The $α$ -branching ratios to $2^{+}$ states are reproduced by means of the QQ strength. This interaction strength can be fitted with a linear dependence on the deformation parameter, as predicted by the CSM. The theoretical intensities to $4^{+}$ and $6^{+}$ states are in reasonable agreement with available experimental data. Predictions are made for spherical, transitional and well deformed even–even $α$ -emitters.

Detailed level schemes, decay schemes, and the experimental data on which they are based are presented for all nuclei with mass number A=248. The experimental reaction and decay data are evaluated; inconsistencies and discrepancies are noted; and adopted values are given for various level properties (including spin and parity, halflife, and configuration), γ properties (including energy, intensity, and multipole character) and α properties (including energy, intensity, and hindrance factor). This evaluation replaces the A=248 evaluation published by A. Akovali in Nuclear Data Sheets 87, 249 (1999).
Analytical description of the coherent state model for near vibrational and well deformed nuclei

Analytical formulas for the excitation energies as well as for the electric quadrupole reduced transition probabilities in the ground, beta and gamma bands were derived within the coherent state model for the near vibrational and well deformed nuclei. Numerical calculations were performed for 42 nuclei exhibiting various symmetries and therefore with specific properties. Comparison of the calculation results with the corresponding experimental data shows a good agreement. The parameters involved in the proposed model satisfy evident regularities being interpolated by smooth curves. Few of them, which fall out of the curves, are interpreted as signatures for a critical point in a specific phase transition. This is actually supported also by the figures showing the excitation energy dependence on the angular momentum. The formulas provided for energies and $B (E 2)$ values are very simple, being written in a compact form, and therefore easy to be handled to explain the new experimental data.
Tetrahedral instability in superheavy nuclei

The present study reports the possibility that the tetrahedral symmetry may manifest itself in superheavy elements through the nonaxial octupole Y₃₂ deformation. The calculations of nonaxial octupole bands are performed by using the Reflection Asymmetric Shell Model for some transfermium nuclei where the spectroscopic data are available, and a very good agreement between theory and experiment has been achieved.
