Abstract

The electric quadrupole interaction frequencies eQVzz/h of 77Br ( Iπ=3/2; T1/2=57 h) and 82Br ( Iπ=5; T1/2=35 h) in hcp Co were measured with modulated adiabatic fast passage on oriented nuclei. The electric quadrupole moment of 77Br is deduced to be Q=+0.53022b, which, on the condition of strong coupling, implies a nuclear deformation of β2=+0.35415. This manifests a drastic increase of the nuclear deformation between 79Br ( β2+0.22) and 77Br.
