Gamow-Teller strengths from (t,3He) charge-exchange reactions on light nuclei

Abstract

Zero-degree cross sections have been measured for (t,³He) reactions on the light target nuclei ⁹Be, ¹⁰B, ¹¹B, ¹²C, and ¹³C at a bombarding energy of 127 MeV/A. The triton beam was produced by (⁴He,t+p) breakup on a Be production target using a ⁴He beam of 155 MeV/A. Dispersion matching was applied to obtain good energy resolution (ΔE/E=0.002, ΔE=780 keV). The zero-degree (t,³He) cross sections are used to discuss Gamow-Teller strengths in ¹⁰Be and ¹¹Be.

Neutrino-nucleus reactions and their role for supernova dynamics and nucleosynthesis

The description of nuclear reactions induced by supernova neutrinos has witnessed significant progress during the recent years. On one hand this progress is due to experimental data which serve as important constraints to model calculations, on the other hand it is related to advances in nuclear modeling itself and in computer hardware. At the energies and momentum transfers relevant for supernova neutrinos, neutrino–nucleus cross sections are dominated by allowed transitions, however, often with non-negligible contributions from (first) forbidden transitions. For several nuclei, allowed Gamow–Teller strength distributions have been derived from charge-exchange reactions and from inelastic electron scattering data. Importantly the diagonalization shell model has been proven to accurately reproduce these data and hence became the appropriate tool to calculate the allowed contributions to neutrino–nucleus cross sections for supernova neutrinos. Higher multipole contributions are usually calculated within the framework of the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation, which describes the total strength and the position of the giant resonances quite well. Both are the relevant quantities for a reliable calculation of the forbidden contributions to the cross sections.
The current manuscript reviews the recent progress achieved in calculating supernova-relevant neutrino–nucleus cross sections and discusses its verification by data. Moreover, the review summarizes also the impact which neutrino–nucleus reactions have on the dynamics of supernovae and on the associated nucleosynthesis. With relevance to the supernova dynamics, these include the absorption of neutrinos by nuclei (the inverse of nuclear electron capture which is the dominating weak-interaction process during collapse), inelastic neutrino–nucleus scattering and nuclear de-excitation by neutrino-pair emission. For supernova nucleosynthesis we discuss the role of neutrino-induced reactions for the recently discovered $ν p$ process, for the $r$ -process and for the neutrino process, for which neutrino–nucleus reactions have the largest impact. Finally we briefly review neutrino–nucleus reactions important for the observation of supernova neutrinos by earthbound detectors.

Spin-isospin excitations probed by strong, weak and electro-magnetic interactions

Gamow–Teller (GT) transitions are the most common weak interaction processes of spin–isospin ( $σ τ$ ) type in atomic nuclei. They are of interest not only in nuclear physics but also in astrophysics; they play an important role in supernovae explosions and nucleosynthesis. The direct study of weak decay processes, however, gives relatively limited information about GT transitions and the states excited via GT transitions (GT states); $β$ decay can only access states at excitation energies lower than the decay $Q$ -value, and neutrino-induced reactions have very small cross-sections. However, one should note that $β$ decay has a direct access to the absolute GT transition strengths $B$ (GT) from a study of half-lives, $Q_{β}$ -values and branching ratios. They also provide information on GT transitions in nuclei far-from-stability. Studies of $M 1 γ$ transitions provide similar information. In contrast, the complementary charge-exchange (CE) reactions, such as the ( $p, n$ ) or (³He, $t$ ) reactions at intermediate beam energies and 0°, can selectively excite GT states up to high excitation energies in the final nucleus. It has been found empirically that there is a close proportionality between the cross-sections at 0° and the transition strengths $B$ (GT) in these CE reactions. Therefore, CE reactions are useful tools to study the relative values of $B$ (GT) strengths up to high excitation energies. In recent (³He, $t$ ) measurements, one order-of-magnitude improvement in the energy resolution has been achieved. This has made it possible to make one-to-one comparisons of GT transitions studied in CE reactions and $β$ decays. Thus GT strengths in (³He, $t$ ) reactions can be normalised by the $β$ -decay values. In addition, comparisons with closely related $M 1$ transitions studied in $γ$ decay or electron inelastic scattering [( $e, e^{'}$ )], and furthermore with “spin” $M 1$ transitions that can be studied by proton inelastic scattering [( $p, p^{'}$ )] have now been made possible. In these comparisons, the isospin quantum number $T$ and associated symmetry structure in the same mass $A$ nuclei (isobars) play a key role. Isospin symmetry can extend our scope even to the structures of unstable nuclei that are far from reach at present unstable beam factories.

The (t,³He) reaction at 115 MeV/nucleon has been developed as a tool to extract Gamow-Teller strengths. A secondary triton beam was used, initially produced from a primary α-beam, but since recently from a primary ¹⁶O beam. An important advantage of the (t,³He) probe is that the data can be combined with results from the (³He,t) reaction, so that studies in the $Δ T_{z} = - 1$ and $Δ T_{z} = + 1$ direction can be performed with similar probes and good resolutions. This is important for improving the understanding of the reaction mechanism and associated errors in the extraction of transition strengths.
Measurement of weak rates for stellar evolution via the (t,3He) reaction

The (t,³He) charge-exchange reaction has been developed as a tool to extract Gamow-Teller strengths on nuclei of importance for stellar evolution. A secondary triton beam of 115 MeV/nucleon is used, either produced from a primary α beam, or, since recently, from a primary ¹⁶O beam. Here, the (t,³He) reaction is used to study the Gamow-Teller strength distribution in ⁵⁸Co via the ⁵⁸Ni(t,³He) reaction. The experimental results are compared with calculations in large-scale shell models using the kb3g and gxpf1 interactions, as well as existing data from ⁵⁸Ni(n, p) and ⁵⁸Ni(d,²He) experiments. The differences between the data and theoretical models are studied in terms of electron-capture rates in the pre-collapse stages of core-collapse supernovae.
