Abstract

One of the major endeavors of nuclear structure theory has been to describe nuclear properties in terms of an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. Yet, 50 years after parametrizing that interaction in terms of central, spin-orbit and tensor components, the role of the latter remains elusive. This review is specifically devoted to an examination of the properties of the tensor interaction and of its importance in describing light and medium weight nuclei. Starting with a synopsis of several landmarks of the effect of the tensor interaction, the review will focus on the properties of unnatural parity states, E1 and M1 moments, and core polarization in shell model calculations of light nuclei. The review will conclude with a careful examination of the role of the tensor interaction in inducing core polarization effects in proton scattering reactions. It will eventually connect with recent renormalization ideas involving the rescaling of nucleon and meson mass.
