Abstract

Alpha recoil separation of a large number of Fr221 sources from a pure almost massless source of Ac225 made possible the study of the level structure of At217 following alpha decay from Fr221. Alphas in coincidence with all gammas and gammas and electrons in coincidence with Fr221 alphas were used in this study. The levels in At217 can be interpreted in terms of the π(h9/2)3 ν(g9/2)4, π(h9/2)2 f7/2 ν(g9/2)4, and π(h9/2)2 i13/2 ν(g9/2)4 shell-model configurations. Considerable similarity in the configurations and energies of the states of At217 and At215 is observed. The only change is in the neutron part of the configurations where the ‘‘particle’’ partial configuration in At215 (...ν(g9/2)4) is replaced by the ‘‘hole’’ partial configuration in At217 (...ν(g9/2)4). No evidence for parity doublets is found in At217.
