Abstract

A staggering index for alternating parity bands in even-even nuclei is discussed. A study of parity-doublet structures shows that the critical angular momentum at which strong octupole correlations develop can be expressed by a universal relation in terms of the P factor, P=NpNn/(Np+Nn).
