Abstract

The quark-meson coupling model which we have developed previously is extended to incorporate the δ meson. It is then used to study the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly and isospin symmetry breaking in nuclear matter. We find that, in combination with the u-d mass difference, the difference between quark scalar densities in protons and neutrons generates an effective neutron-proton mass difference of the right magnitude. Finally we find that isospin symmetry breaking in the quark condensates can be directly related to the δ meson field.

It is interesting to note that the QMC model predicts a negative neutron skin in 40Ca, in agreement with experiment [D.P. Watts, Personal communication] and some ab initio models [G. Hagen et al., Personal communication]. We observe that when the QMC model is supplemented by the addition of an isovector scalar field, the in-medium variation of the neutron–proton mass difference can provide a semi-quantitative explanation [86] of the Okamoto–Nolen–Schiffer anomaly [87–89]. While the vast majority of the investigations of the importance of a change of hadron structure in-medium have been based upon the MIT bag model, its limitations have led to developments involving more sophisticated models of hadron structure.
