Abstract

The region of neutron-rich nuclei around N = 20 is examined in a shell-model framework. The failure of conventional calculations to reproduce the experimental data is cured by the inclusion of intruder configurations. Deformed intruders account for the shape changes at N = 19, 20 in Ne, Na and Mg. Most experimental results — masses, lifetimes, level schemes, etc. — are well reproduced.
