Abstract

The sign of the quadrupole moment of 8Li was determined by a NMR-experiment to be positive in accordance with theory. The experiment utilizes thermal nuclear-spin-polarized 8Li atoms adsorbed on an oxygen-covered W(110) surface. For this surface the sign of the electricfield gradient is known from similar experiments with 6Li and 7Li.
