Abstract

A recent study of the C12(16O,8Be)20Ne and C12(16O,α)24Mg reactions has led, through cross channel correlation analysis, to the identification of two superdeformed shape isomeric states in Si28 at excitation energies of 43.7 and 46.2 MeV. We suggest that both these states may have α-α16O-α nuclear molecule structure. Our suggestion is supported theoretically by cranked cluster model calculations and experimentally by previous studies of the C12(12C,αα)16O reaction, C12+12C scattering, and the C12(20Ne,12C12C)8Be transfer reaction.
