Abstract

The spin-flip magnetic dipole states in deformed nuclei in the rare earth region are calculated within the quasi-particle random phase approximation. In all cases we obtain a concentration of spin-flip strength around 8 MeV, and in some of the nuclei a second bump appears about 2 MeV lower.
