The matrix elements involved in the double-beta-decay process for the nuclei ${}_{}{}^{76}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Ge}$ and ${}_{}{}^{82}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Se}$ are calculated in terms of the variational wave functions resulting from realistic effective interactions operating in the unrestricted (2${\mathit{p}}_{1/2}$, 2${\mathit{p}}_{3/2}$, 1${\mathit{f}}_{5/2}$, 1${\mathit{g}}_{9/2}$${)}^{\mathrm{\pi },\nu }$ configuration space.
