Abstract

The systematics of quasifree scattering have been studied and parametrized for incident proton energies of 100–1000 MeV on a variety of targets. The observed position of the quasifree scattering peak at various emission angles closely tracks the kinematics for free nucleon-nucleon scattering. The peak widths are a function of the incident energy and of sinθ in the N-N center of mass. The angle-integrated cross section is described in terms of a peripheral interaction with a single nucleon in the target nucleus and has a threshold of 150–200 MeV. The angular variation of the cross section is either nearly isotropic or, at higher energies, exponential in cosθ. The simple parametrization derived here allows a semiquantitative estimate of quasifree scattering peaks with no adjustable parameters.
