Abstract

The nuclear quadrupole deformation has been investigated for the isotopes 182W, 184W and 186W by means of multiple Coulomb excitation with a 208Pb beam. E2 transition probabilities and static quadrupole moments were deduced for yrast states with spins up to 18ħ. The results for the heavier isotopes 184W and 186W are consistent with an axially symmetric deformation. In contrast, the 182W isotope exhibits a non-axial deformation together with an unexpected shape change at spin I = 10+h̷.
