Abstract

Properties of infinite nuclear matter and those of finite nuclei are studied in the Gell-Mann and Levy chiral field theory, solved to a one-fermion loop approximation. The usual one-meson loop correction gives an effective potential which is not real and convex everywhere, and is thus not considered in this work. It is found that the ground states of finite nuclei in this model are kinky, highly exotic nuclear structures, whose binding energy per nucleon is about −120 MeV. Normal nuclei are also investigated. The deficiencies of the Gell-Mann and Levy model, solved to one-fermion loop approximation are discussed.
