Measurement of the (p, n) inclusive spin transfer parameters K0nn0C and K0k″k0C on carbon with 590 MeV protons

Abstract

A polarized neutron beam has been produced at SIN (now PSI) by the $C (p, n) X$ reaction using a 590 MeV polarized proton beam. From the measurement of the neutron polarization the spin transfer parameters K_0nn0^C and K_0k″k0^C have been determined. While K_0nn0^C is rather small at all measured energies, K_0k″k0^C is as large as −0.5 above 300 MeV.

The nucleon facility NA at PSI

The Nucleon Area (NA) at the Paul-Scherrer-Institut (PSI) was built as a multi-purpose facility for experiments with polarized or unpolarized protons or neutrons. For both kinds of nucleons the available energy ranges from about 100 MeV up to a maximum of 590 MeV. This article presents technical details of the layout of the nucleon beams and areas, the experimental arrangements, and the equipment employed. An experimental program on neutron-proton scattering is presently carried out using the NA facility at PSI. We put special emphasis on the polarized neutron beam and its use to measure the neutron-proton elastic scattering.
Spin-dependent neutron-proton total cross section differences Δσ<inf>L</inf> and Δσ<inf>T</inf> from 140 to 590 MeV

Energy dependence of the neutron-proton total cross section differences Δσ<inf>T</inf> and Δσ<inf>L</inf> between 0.31 and 1.1 GeV

Final results for total cross section differences Δσ_T and Δσ_L measured with a polarized neutron beam transmitted through a polarized proton target are presented. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at 11 energies between 0.63 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ_T and at 9 energies between 0.312 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ_L. The results are compared with measurements at PSI and LAMPF as well as with Δσ_L data points deduced from p-d and p-p transmission experiments at the ANL-ZGS. The present results together with the corresponding pp data allow to determine two of the three imaginary parts of forward scattering amplitudes for isospin I = 0.
