Abstract

Deformed shell model calculations based on an average Woods-Saxon potential with a monopole pairing force included show for a number of nuclei close to A≈130 the appearance of rotational bands with a large deformation, ß2≈0.4. These bands, which are related to the alignment of i132 neutrons, become yrast at high spin (I⪆30 h̷) and can be identified with the so-called “superdeformed” bands observed in e.g. 132Ce.

The staggering behavior has been analyzed for the γ-softness in nuclear shapes for many isotopes of Xe, Ba and Ce [3] using geometrical models. Some nuclei [4] in the same mass region are expected to show highly deformed shapes at high spins due to particle alignment in the intruder orbit. Though extensive research work exists in literature describing various aspects of nuclear behavior at high spins, a lot of inconsistencies have remained between theory and experimental observations.

New experimental information is also reported on several medium-spin bands related to the t-band, in particular odd-spin partners of the S-bands and the continuation at high spins of the ground state band. Several theoretical models have been used to interpret the observed structures: Total Routhian Surface (TRS) [2], tilted axis cranking (TAC) [9], particle rotor model (PRM) [14], and projected shell model (PSM) [15,16]. The 130Ba nucleus has been populated via the 122Sn(13C,5n) reaction at a beam energy of 65 MeV.

The deformation values in Table 1 are same as used in our earlier investigations [11,15]. For Ce and Nd isotopes around A∼130, forking of the ground-state into s-bands has been observed [41,42] and in the present work we have evaluated g-factors for these band structures. It has been demonstrated in our earlier work [11] that in some of these nuclei, γ-bands built on two-quasiparticle structure becomes favoured in energy as for Ge-isotopes studied above.
