Abstract

A corrected closure approximation is used to calculate the reduced rates for radiative capture of negative pions from 1s and 2p orbitals in H3, He3, and He4. For He3 and He4 the calculated rates are in good agreement with experimental data. In the case of H3, the calculated value for 1s capture is combined with the measured radiative capture branching ratio to obtain a value of Γtot1s=2.2±0.4 eV for the total width of the 1s level in the H3 pionic atom. This value when compared to the measured total width of the 1s level in pionic He3 implies a small but definite contribution of singlet spin nucleon pairs to absorption of s-wave pions.
